Newborn Session Info

What happens during a newborn session?

Newborn sessions are designed for families with babies 8 weeks old or younger, and will take place in your home.  Since babies arrive on their own schedule, I will block off my calendar around your due date and ask you to email me at when the baby has arrived and you are home from the hospital.

As you can see from my newborn portfolio, I specialize in lifestyle newborn sessions.  I love to capture the little moments you have as a family – cuddling on the couch or on your bed, admiring those brand-new fingers and toes, feeding or changing the baby, or letting a big sibling hold and kiss their new baby brother or sister.  My favorite images are the ones where the baby is awake and enjoying their new world.

Newborn sessions are different from my regular portrait sessions, and they typically last about two hours to allow for feedings, diaper changes, etc. I like to start newborn sessions around 9-10 am. Before I arrive, I recommend that your baby has a full belly and is dressed in a plain white onesie.

When I arrive, I will ask for a tour of your house.  This will let me determine which rooms have the nicest light and will help me form ideas of what photos I will take in each room.  My favorite rooms for photos are usually the living room, master bedroom (I love family photos on the bed!) and, of course, the nursery.

I know what it is like to have a new baby and I know that your house might not be spotless (and if it is, please tell me your cleaning secrets)!  I do ask, though, that you clear as much clutter as possible from tables, shelves, etc., so that there are no distractions in your photos.  During the session, I may also ask to move furniture just a little, or rearrange things ever so slightly to get the image just perfect.  I promise to help put everything back in its place :)

Please feel free to let me know if you have anything special you would like to include in your photos. Some clients have a hat that dad wore when he was brought home from the hospital as a baby, or a blanket that the baby’s great-grandmother knitted. Including these keepsakes can make the photos even more special.

What happens after our session?

I will edit your images and will post a sneak peek for you on Facebook within a day or two.  Feel free to tag yourself in the photo and share it with your friends!  Within two weeks, I will mail you your photos, prettily packaged and presented on a custom USB.  You can print and share these high-resolution files however you’d like.
